history of tats

The first permanent tattoo shop in new york city was set up in 1846 and began a tradition by tattooing military men during the civil war. In 1891 the electric machine for tattooing was invented by Samuel O'reilly.

In Samoa, the tradition of applying tattoo by hand has been unbroken for over two thousand years. Tools and techniques have changed very little. The skill is often passed from father to son, each tattoo artist learning the craft over many years of serving as his father's apprentice.
The word tattoo is a  from the polynesian word tatau, meaning "to write".
